Department of Materials Science and Processing, -Faculty of Engineering, Osaka University, 2-1 Yamadaoka, Suita 565 JAPAN Application of extreme value stati'iiics to corrosion is rcvieweJ. It is cmpha sized that the concept of corroiiion probability is important for a quanlitalivc evaluatioti Of corrosion failure and its prediction, especially for localized corrosion. Extreme value statistics is quite useful for assessing the maximum pit depth and/or the minimum time for crack generation. The maximum pit depth depending on the stirface area can be evaluated hy using the Gumbel distribution with the concept of return period. A standardized procedure i.? proposed for estimating the maximum pit depth. Examples of corrosion failure analysis using extreme value statistics, which were reported mainly in Japan, arc shown. Accumulated experiences suggest thai an appropriate classification of data based on the corroiiion mechanism is reijuircd iKfore applying extreme value analysis.

Chemical fracture statistics and universal distribution of extreme values
– When a corrosive solution reaches the limits of a solid sample, a chemical fracture occurs. An analytical theory for the probability of this chemical fracture is proposed and confirmed by extensive numerical experiments on a two dimensional model. This theory follows from the general probability theory of extreme events given by Gumbel. The analytic law differs from the Weibull law commonly u...
متن کاملApplication of Taguchi design for optimization of corrosion behavior of amorphous silica thin film deposited through sol-gel dipping technique
Amorphous silica thin films were applied on the 316L stainless steel substrates by sol-gel dipping technique. The starting chemicals (TEOS, ethanol, HCl, PEG, and NaOH) were used to prepare a gel and then deposited on a substrate. The microstructure, topography, corrosion behavior, and surface hardness were investigated using SEM, AFM, electrochemical method, and micro-hardness measurements. Th...
متن کاملApplication of Extreme Value Analysis to Corrosion Mapping Data
Extreme Value Analysis can be used to extrapolate sample inspection data into uninspected regions of a component. These methods can be used in conjunction with structural reliability software to predict the probability of future failure of the component. This information can help both operators and regulators make risk-based decisions on the future operation of the plant. This paper illustrates...

Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA 16802 Various attempts have been made (o develop models for predicting the development of damage in metals and alloys due to pitting corrosion. These muOcIs may be divided into two cliu.ses: the cmpirieiil approach which employ.s extreme value statistics, and the deterministic approach based on perceived mechanisms for nuclcation and growth of ...
